Who's Who In Black Detroit

Achievements

Detroit and the surrounding region constitute a major center of commerce and global trade, most notably as home to America's 'Big Three' automobile companies, General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler. About 80,500 people work in downtown Detroit, comprising one-fifth of the city's employment base.[59][89] Detroit's six county Metropolitan Statistical Area has a population of about 4.3 million and a workforce of about 2.1 million.[90] In May 2011, the Department of Labor reported metropolitan Detroit's unemployment rate at 11.6%, with the city's unemployment rate for May 2011 at 20%.[91][92] The Detroit MSA had a gross metropolitan product of $197.7 billion in 2010.[93]

Firms in the region pursue emerging technologies including biotechnology, nanotechnology, information technology, and hydrogen fuel cell development. The city of Detroit has made efforts to lure the region's growth companies downtown with advantages such as a wireless Internet zone, business tax incentives, entertainment, an International Riverfront, and residential high rises. Compuware completed its world headquarters in downtown Detroit in 2003. OnStar, Blue Cross Blue Shield, and HP Enterprise Services have located at the Renaissance Center. PricewaterhouseCoopers Plaza offices are adjacent to Ford Field and Ernst & Young completed its office building at One Kennedy Square in 2006.

In 2010, Quicken Loans relocated its world headquarters and 4,000 employees to downtown Detroit consolidating its suburban offices, a move considered of high importance to city planners to reestablish the historic downtown.[98] Some Fortune 500 companies headquartered in Detroit include General Motors, auto parts maker American Axle & Manufacturing, and DTE Energy.[99] Other major industries include advertising, law, finance, biomedical research, health care, and computer software. The law firm of Miller, Canfield, Paddock & Stone, one of the largest in the U.S., has offices in both Detroit and Windsor. Wayne State University and medical service providers are major employers in the city.[13][29][30] Metro Detroit area is one of the leading health care economies in the U.S. according to a 2003 study measuring health care industry components, with the region's hospital sector ranked fourth in the nation.[100]

Celebrate, Inspire, Educate

I would like to thank everyone who participated in this sixth edition of Who’s Who In Black Detroit®. I appreciate those who took the time to speak with us about their careers and accomplishments. I truly believe that we should all share our personal and professional journeys and let them serve as an inspiration to others.

Who’s Who provides a unique opportunity to learn about the success we have attained as a people and shows the diversity and unlimited possibilities for success. Who’s Who celebrates African-American achievement, while showcasing our contributions to society. Our stories go a long way to inspire young professionals to reach for new heights and to take advantage of any opportunity for higher education.

I am personally committed to telling our stories to young people, specifically grade school students. It is important for them to be able to see successful people so that the seeds of success can be sown in our youth. When children know that people from their communities that look like them can be, and have been successful it shows them all of the possibilities that exist for them. This year, we are paying special tribute to 100 Black presidents and CEOs.

One hundred African-American men and women who manage thousands of employees and billions of dollars that contribute enormously to southeastern Michigan’s economic viability. We are also recognizing our spiritual leaders who stand in the gaps in our community by engaging in business beyond the church. On behalf of their parishioners, they own golf courses, operate community development coalitions, build housing complexes, educate children and continuously participate in the building and uplifting of our communities.

Lastly, I want to welcome Don Williams to the Who’s Who family of publishers. Don hails from Grand Rapids and in this edition of Who’s Who, we feature a special tribute to Who’s Who In Black Grand Rapids®. Once again, it has been my pleasure to serve as associate publisher of Who’s Who In Black Detroit®. There’s a lot to experience in this year’s publication, but more importantly I urge our community to always celebrate, inspire and educate so that we can achieve even more.

Enjoy,
